[ New York ] MOMA and Alexander McQueen at the MET

IMG_0226

The design by Alexander McQueen is nothing like we see in stores. The works by McQueen exhibited at the "Savage Beauty" exhibition at the New York MET are truly like pieces of art. McQueen\'s design reflect many aspects of "Romanticism", a movement in art history that is characterized by dramatic expressions of emotions. His.. (continue reading...)

" Glaser compares this rudimentary rebus to a declaration of love carved into a tree trunk".
The original I Love New York design sketches by Milton Glaser in 1976. The icon was designed at a time when "fear of crime was depressing tourism". The  New York City State Government then commissioned an advertising agency to develop a campaign that presents the city in a more positive light. And this was the result.  It\'s now the most frequently imitated design in the world.

A washing machine. Contemporary art can be pretty difficult to understand. But there\'s a kind of contemporary art that takes what you\'re familiar with everyday and add a twist to it. Sometimes that makes you think a little and sometimes it makes you feel that is quite impressive and makes you see something from an angle that you\'ve never thought of before.

I forgot what this was about. It was a wall with frames and comic characters inside.

This is a focus shot of one of the frames from the previous photo. I think it might have something to do with hair design from time to time and in old advertisements.
Somethings were highlighted and made into 3D in some of the comics/pictures.

There are some famous paintings by Henri Rousseau. I think the last time I saw these paintings were in 2006 at a Rousseau exhibition named "Jungles in Paris" at the Tate Modern in London. Rousseau never left France once in his entire life. But he was able to construct vivid and imaginative works of life in exotic jungles.

There was also several water lilies pieces by C. Monet as well.

Another painting in the MOMA that might catch your eyes is the famous Starry Starry Night by Van Gogh.

People lining up in front of the Metropolitan Museum on a weekday morning for the exhibition before the museum was opened.

All the exhibited items all had a story to tell. I love the dress filled with flowers, others with a sense of Japanese or Oriental influence, and those with influence of natural elements. The gothic pieces are very supernatural. The ones that utilizes elements of natural things like feathers, alligator, etc were very eye-opening as well. As many people said, it really takes more than an ordinary man to create all of that. McQueen\'s works are truly Romantic in spirit, so as the way his life ended. He committed suicide last year.

I wasn\'t planning to go to the Metropolitan Museum. But because the Alexander McQueen exhibition was here so I went. I\'m glad that I went. Otherwise I wouldn\'t have noticed how much stuff I would miss out if I didn\'t go. You can easily spend over half a day in this museum (that is, if you\'re interested in art).

The Metropolitan Museum is pretty big. In terms of collection, I think it\'s also comparable to the British Museum in London and the Louvre in Paris.

You can find lots of famous pieces that you see in art history textbooks here. I used to go to museums and art galleries just to see the originals of the pieces I studied in class. The differences between the originals and the "replicas" or reprints in the books are immense.  For instance, you can only experience the real size of the work and the depth and brush strokes of the works when you see the work in front of you as if you were the painter. It\'s a totally different sensation.

IMG_0264

I remember seeing a replica of this painting on a postcard when I was very small and thought that it was a photo rather than a painting. The lighting, the shadows and the way the dress folds and falls, they all look so real. But Ingres, a famous painter in Paris from the 19th century, was able to paint like this and the strong contrast and realism also become major characteristics of his portrait paintings.

There are also works by the British landscape painter J.M.W. Turner. The painter is probably not so well known outside of UK or Europe. But I love how he captures the turmoil of the time of industrial revolution in his impressionistic brushes.
