I have a special mission on my second visit to this particular Youth Travel Spots in Taiwan this time. Part of that was to experience the living of seaside towns. I must say, Keelung is one of the more unique seaside villages/towns. It doesn\'t ... (continue reading...)
... fall behind its time; in fact, it\'s trying to catch up with time by introducing more large-scale changes to the place that aim to bring new things (other than commercial trade) and concept to its people.
Another day filled with lots of things on our itinerary. Was happy to see the same organizers again (since my last Keelung Ghost Festival excursion 2 years ago). But also glad to have met some old friends and new friends on this trip.
Taking our bus to the first stop to see the "Green Tunnel".
Named the "green tunnel" because of the way the trees grow here.
We were all doing some "jump shots" when someone noticed that there was a frog sleeping in this trunk. It just looked like a baby with its eyes closed.
We walked across a bridge that led us away from the island of Taiwan to a community area. Here, an island was "created" to bulid the first fire power plant that sat on artificial land and used sea water to cool the power generators.
We could see the harbour on one side, the other side was the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology under construction.
From the design, ID number and the fishing equipment on the ship, we could tell what is this fishing boat\'s size and what kind of things it fishes. Fishing boats have the "weight" at the front of the boat are more fuel efficient when they are sailing through large waves. Fishing boats with large lamps are usually for fishing at night and those with harpoon-like things at the front of the boat were used to catch marlins.
The huge lamps ont he boats cost a fortune because these super bright lights are used to attract fish/squid that surface to the water when there\'s light.
By the fishing village.
The Tidal Zone Park - This place used to be a disposal/burial site for waste. But it couldn\'t take any more trash so it was transformed into a greener and more reusable piece of land.
Decorative art in the park. The materials that were used to make these as well as the "fences" you see in the photo were all recycled material.
View from the Chaojing (Tidal Zone) Park
The typhoon just passed by a day ago but the waves were still pretty unpredictable.
The August sun could be intolerable. We were happy to have reached the restaurant where we had our lunch.
The restaurant offered us a cool drink when we got in. It was the right thing at the right time. The other photo shows all the food that had been prepared for us.
We had 3 main course options to choose from. Many of us chose the fish.
The restaurant has a pretty nice view of the harbour.
When a wave hit, it could generate a sound that sounds similiar to a group doing drums.
The pretty waves
The National Museum of Marine Science and Technology is not yet completed. So in the park, we find an office set up to do the preparation work for the operation. This building will not be open to the public once the museum is completed so I suppose we got to document the process.
The plan for the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology. The first pavilion will be completed and open to the public in 2012. The rest of the pavilions and IMAX theatre will be open after. This massive project will hopefully bring new life and energy to the local economy.
In the current building, we passed by an area where marine creatures were placed in quarantine before they can be released to the larger water tanks.
The inside are filled with a lot o f "dead" things.
We went to a room on the upper floor that has a temporary exhibit on deep sea creatures. As we stepped into the room, we could smell of formalin.
These two OMG looking things are baby shark and baby whale shark that were taken out of the body of their mother when the mother was caught. But they couldn\'t survive so they ended up here.
The lantern fish (remember Nemo?? xP) A lot of the deep sea fish cannot live outside of their comfortable pressured zone (pressure level in deep sea is very different from elsewhere). So even if they were caught and kept a live for a few days, they will eventually die.
An exhibit that talks about Taiwan as a aquaculture kingdom.
The cylinders with flourescent colours contain some zooplankton for fish to feed on.
These crabs looked kinda interesting. They look like rocks. There are also things growing on its arms and legs.
This fish seems to enjoy staying near the crab.
All the beautiful displays of corals and sea ananome.
This sea anaome has a glowing green light inside to attract food.
